EMWMF Operations Information

EMWMF Ops SiteThe Environmental Management Waste Management Facility, or EMWMF, is an above-grade, earthen disposal facility currently consisting of 4 cells and supporting facilities located west of the Oak Ridge Y-12 National Security Complex in East Bear Creek Valley. The EMWMF, operated by UCOR for the U.S. Department of Energy, is designed to receive low-level (radioactive) waste, hazardous waste as defined under RCRA, waste as defined under the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976 (TSCA), and mixed waste consisting of combinations of these waste types. Waste disposed in the EMWMF is from contaminated areas at the DOE Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) and associated off-ORR sites undergoing remedial action under the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act.
